Oh, and congratulations in advance to the winner! :)

1/30/2012

24-hour warning

Just a reminder that you now only have 24 hours to vote in the final if you haven't already.

Due to time constraints, I've had to move the deadline forward to 21:00 CET tomorrow night, Tuesday 31 January. If anyone still intends to vote but knows they won't be able to send them to me by then, please let me know. Then again, you'd only have another three hours anyway, so it shouldn't be that much of an ask ;)

The voting's very tight, so, er, every vote will count! (And if you can submit them tonight, even better!)

Voting reminder

Remember that voting in the final is open until Tuesday 31 January (although if you could get your votes to me by Monday it would be appreciated).

And here's the link to Noah's site (thanks again, Noah!):

Everything could still change, et cetera... ;)

Voting in the final

After the somewhat cryptic reference to 'live voting' in the post below, I thought I'd better explain in a bit more detail!

What I'm planning on doing for the results show is to invite sponsors and other voters to present their votes themselves, 'live', on the MB. This means that I will call on voters one at a time to reveal their points, with me then providing a scoreboard update after each voter.

The idea is to make it as interactive as possible, and also to tap into the spirit of past contests - since there will undoubtedly be teething troubles and mishaps here and there! Just make sure you don't change your votes between submitting them to me and the night itself...

The problem, of course, is that the order of presentation of the votes won't be finalised until the day of the results show (next Wednesday 1 February). I'll endeavour to post the order as soon as possible, both here on the site and on the MB. Of course, the sooner you all vote, the easier it will be for me! ;)

However, if you know you won't be around to vote 'live' next Wednesday, that's no problem - I can always present your votes for you. Similarly, if you will only be around at/from a certain time on the night, let me know and I'll see if I can accommodate you. The voting is likely to start from 20:00 CET.

So there you have it - a newish take on MB contest voting! Fingers crossed it works out...

And here's the link to download them if you want to again separately:

Multiupload wasn't working so it's just the one option at the moment, although I'm sure Noah will be a star and upload them as well to his site - check the highlighted post on the MB for details. But then you don't really need to download them again anyway if you've already listened to both semis, right? ;)

----------

Voting

1. If your entry is in the final, you must vote. If you don't, your entry will be disqualified, regardless of what it's result would have been. (It'll also be disqualified if you tell anyone which entry is yours prior to the revelations!)

2. Voting is also open to sponsors whose entries didn't qualify from the semis and non-participants.

3. Voting is in Eurovision style: 1-8, 10 & 12 points. And you can't vote for your own entry, obviously.

4. The email address to send your votes to is the same as ever: etnw2012@gmail.com.

5. The deadline for voting in the final is next Tuesday 31 January.

6. Remember that you are not simply voting for your favourite entries: your main criteria should still be how authentic you feel the entries are (i.e. how good a match they are for the year + country combination). But then, if you find 10 entries you think are all good matches, it then basically comes down to taste :)

7. The results show next Wednesday 1 February will be 'live' - this means that everyone who votes in the final should make the effort to be available to give their votes themselves on the night. More info on this in due course.

----------

In the meantime, enjoy the final!

Schedule for tonight

Everything isn't ready on time :( so this is the revised schedule for tonight's 'show' (all times CET):

----------

21:00 - Revelation of qualifiers for Semi 1

21:15 - Revelation of qualifiers for Semi 2

21:30 - Start of final

----------

Please note that there will be important information about the voting when the final is launched, so everyone who qualifies and anyone else planning on voting should take note :)

See you later this evening for the big reveal!

Voting has closed in Semi 2

The votes are in for Semi 2 and we have our next (and indeed final) 11 qualifiers for the, er, final. Thanks to everyone who voted!

To find out who qualified from both semis you'll have to watch the 'revelation shows' later tonight, Thursday 26 January. The exact times have yet to be determined, so watch this space.

The final will go live straight/soon/at some point* after the revelation shows. A separate announcement will be made to that effect. See you then!

*depending on how long it takes me to get everything uploaded and whatnot ;)

1/24/2012

24 hours left to vote in Semi 2!

As the heading suggests, voting in Semi 2 closes at midnight CET tomorrow night, Wednesday 25 January.

More non-participants have voted than sponsors at the moment, so I guess I should remind you all that if you fail to vote you'll be summarily disqualified! ;)

1/23/2012

Voting has closed in Semi 1

Voting in Semi 1 closed at midnight CET last night with all sponsors submitting their points on time and quite a lot of other participants chipping in, too. Thanks everyone!

We now have our first 11 qualifiers for the final - but to find out who they are you'll have to wait until this Thursday 26 January for the revelations and start of the final.

In the meantime, keep voting in Semi 2. Since it closes on Wednesday, consider this your 48-hour warning! ;)

1/21/2012

24-hour warning for voting in Semi 1

The heading says it all ;) Voting in Semi 1 closes at midnight CET tomorrow night, Sunday 22 January.

Quite a few of you have yet to do so, and I suppose I should remind you that if you don't vote you'll be disqualified :-P

Disqualification kaos #2

It has been brought to my attention that Denmark 2003 - Pretty Little Thing in Semi 2 is a cover of the Stella Soleil song of the same name released on her 2001 album 'Dirty Little Secret'.

As the rules of ETNW clearly state that no cover versions are allowed (since ESC itself wouldn't allow them), I'm afraid this means I'll have to disqualify it. Sorry sponsor! If anyone was planning on voting for it... well, don't waste your points ;)

Also, as this means that both semis have been reduced by one entry, the top 11 from each will now go through to a final of 22 songs.

1/18/2012

Semi 2

Welcome to the 2nd semi-final of ETNW 2012!

Below you will find a list of the entries in this semi and a link to downloadthe songs. If there are any problems, hopefully Noah will be good enough to upload them to his site, too. (Thanks again for your help, Noah!)

If anyone has a bone to pick, please email me directly rather than/prior to raising issues on the MB. And take a look below to remind yourself about voting.

Voting

1. If your entry is in this semi, you must vote. If you don't, your entry will be disqualified, regardless of whether it would have qualified or not.

2. Voting is also open to sponsors whose entries are in the other semi and non-participants.

3. Voting is in Eurovision style: 1-8, 10 & 12 points. And you can't vote for your own entry, obviously.

4. The email address to send your votes to is the same as the one you submitted your entry to: etnw2012@gmail.com.

5. The deadline for voting in Semi 2 is next Wednesday 25 January.

6. Remember that you are not simply voting for your favourite entries: your main criteria should still be how authentic you feel the entries are (i.e. how good a match they are for the year + country combination). For example, if you listen to one song and think "yep, that sounds exactly like what a Georgian entry in 1999 would have been like" and then another and think "I like that more than the Georgia 1999 entry, but it's not as good a match", Georgia 1999 - or whatever it is - should still get higher points. Then again, you might find 10 entries that you think are all good matches, in which case it then more or less comes down to taste ;)

The top 11 entries from each semi will qualify for the final, plus the highest-scoring 12th placed song, to make a final of 23 songs.

That's everything, I think. Enjoy listening and voting, and good luck to all of the sponsors!

Notification of withdrawal

The sponsor of Sweden 1973 - Sunny Girl (Hepstars) in Semi 1 has asked that the entry be withdrawn in light of the news that it breaks the contest rules. So withdrawn it shall be. (The sponsor has also asked to remain anonymous, which I am happy to respect.)

Needless to say that anyone who has already voted in Semi 1 and wishes to resubmit their votes in light of the entry's withdrawal has until the deadline to do so :)

1/15/2012

Disqualification kaos!

It has been pointed out that song #2 in Semi 1 (Sweden 1973 - Sunny Girl) breaks the rules because the band featured Benny from ABBA, who obviously performed at Eurovision.

I won't disqualify the song; instead, I'll leave it up to individual voters' conscience as to whether they vote for it. Although technically, yes, you shouldn't ;)

Sorry sponsor... but you should have done your homework and/or read the rules :-P

Semi 1

Welcome to the 1st semi-final of ETNW 2012!

Below you will find a list of the entries in this semi and a link to the multi-upload-download-whatever site that Anthi used in BOTY :) If anyone has any problems downloading the .zip file, the songs should also go up on Noah's site in due course. (Thanks both of you for your tips and help!)

If your entry isn't in this semi, it'll be in the other one - so no need for me to inform you, right? ;) If anyone has any grievances, please contact me directly at the email address you submitted your entries to instead of (or at least before) raising them on the MB.

See below for details on voting.

----------

Semi 1

ETNW 2012 - Finalised schedule

Here is the finalised schedule for this year's contest, now that we know how many entries we have.

Voting - Semi 1 starts: Sunday 15 January 2012
Voting - Semi 2 starts: Wednesday 18 January 2012
Voting - Semi 1 ends: Sunday 22 January 2012
Voting - Semi 2 ends: Wednesday 25 January 2012

Qualifier revelation: Thursday 26 January 2012
Voting - Final starts: Thursday 26 January 2012
Voting - Final ends: Tuesday 31 January 2012

Sponsor revelation & results: Wednesday 1 February 2012

Hope that suits everyone and doesn't clash with any national finals or anything. Voting deadlines are all nominally midnight CET on the day in question, but there's always a little bit of leeway. The start times for the semis, final, revelations and results are basically whenever I get around to it, but I'll try and give you all some warning ;)

See you for the launch of Semi 1 tomorrow night!

46 entries received for ETNW 2012

Submissions have now closed and 46 entries have been received for the 2012 edition of the Eurovision That Never Was. That's slightly up on last year, so \o/!

Pending final checks of entries - which will take a while, since most of them failed to download properly first time :( - the first semi-final will be launched tomorrow tonight. The finalised schedule for the contest will appear shortly. Watch this space.

Thanks and good luck to everyone who's entered!

1/12/2012

24-hour warning for submissions

Still haven't submitted your entry but don't want to miss the deadline? You have until tomorrow, Friday 13 January. Midnight CET or some such. Saturday morning basically ;)

All of this applies to anyone intending to change their entry, needless to say. Hopefully if you do though there won't be any problems with whatever you pick instead!

1/11/2012

48-hour warning for submissions

Anyone still intending to do so has a couple of days left to submit their entries. The last day for submission is this Friday 13 January.

I suppose the cut-off should be midnight CET, but given I won’t be doing a final tally until I drag myself out of bed on Saturday, there’s a bit of room for manoeuvre ;-)

Thanks to all of you who’ve submitted entries already over the last week or so!

1/09/2012

Angel-Chiara #4

Entries are continuing to come in - more than enough for two semis now! - and sure enough we have another Angel-Chiara country. It being...

FRANCE

Submissions are open until Friday for those of you who, er, still haven't. Don't leave it too late!

1/05/2012

Angel-Chiara #2 & Angel-Chiara #3

As entries continue to come in we've already got our next Angel-Chiara countries. (For those who don't know, this means three or more entries have already been received for the same country.) (Which is not to say you can't submit entries for those countries anymore, but you might want to try something else for variety's sake. After all, if half the entries in your semi are from, say, the UK and fishing for the same votes, your chances of getting them may be significantly reduced.)

Anyway, our next two countries are...

YUGOSLAVIA

and

GERMANY

So... there :D Keep submitting!

1/04/2012

Angel-Chiara #1

Entries are pouring in (well, given only a couple of hours have passed since submissions opened) and perhaps not surprisingly we already have our first Angel-Chiara country. That being...

UNITED KINGDOM

A fifth (!) of all of the entries received so far have been for the UK. Those yet to submit might want to bear that in mind ;)

Looking forward to more entries!

Submissions are now open!

Start sending me your entries for ETNW 2012! The email address you should send them to is etnw2012@gmail.com.

(If you have specific questions about your entry, send them to me at the same address. General questions you can ask me on the MB and Facebook if you like – that way everyone can see the answers. One word of warning though: do NOT submit entries via Facebook, Hotmail, MSN or any other way. Ta!)

So, here's what you need to include with your submission:

1. Your MB nickname
2. Info about your entry

*The name of your song
*The name of the artist
*The year and country you’re allocating it to

For example: Iceland 1995 – Army of Me (Björk)

3. An MP3 of your entry

Please delete any information from the MP3 that could pinpoint you as the entry’s sponsor. Also, do your best to ensure that the sound quality is good – otherwise some people might mark it down.

At some point after you’ve submitted your entry (generally the evening of the same day hopefully, or the next day at the latest) you’ll get a confirmation email – either that it’s all good or something needs changing.

I’ll only ask you to change your entry if it breaks the rules or if the same song or something else by the same artist has already been submitted. Similarly, I’ll only ask you to change your country/year combination if it’s already taken.

And just a personal plea: I’d be grateful if the subject line of your email when submitting your entry was e.g. “Roger’s ETNW 2012 entry”. Makes it much easier when going back to search for things. Thanks :)

Submissions are open until Friday 13 January. Go!

ETNW 2012 - Opening ceremony

Welcome to the Eurovision That Never Was 2012!

If you’re new to the contest, or even if you’re already familiar with what it’s about, let yourself be reminded by this little blurb...

ETNW is about choosing a song you think sounds like it could have been an entry in Eurovision - from any country that’s ever taken part in any year between 1956 and 2011. Maybe there’s some Armenian song you’ve just discovered (possibly featuring pomegranate or some other fruit with religious connotations) which you thought would have made a great entry for the country in Moscow; or you’ve always loved a Belgian song you’re sure the Walloons would have gone for in 1973 if it hadn’t been Flanders’ turn.

Your entry might scream Eurovision and pick itself, or it could take you a while before you’re sure it would have slotted in perfectly for that country in that year. But whatever it is you come up with, use your imagination; think ‘what if…?’ – it's the Eurovision That Never Was, after all. It’s up to you how you interpret that. With any luck it’ll provide us with a good variety of music and a worthy winner!

ETNW is about coming up with an entry you reckon is as authentic as possible given the year and country you’ve allocated it to – which is, importantly, how your voting should work. Say there are two songs you’re torn between: one you like but which doesn’t really feel like it comes from ESC, and the other which you don’t like as much but which seems as though it was lifted straight out of Eurovision. Your higher mark should go to the second one. That’s what distinguishes ETNW from other MB contests: it’s not about personal taste as such, but rewarding good matches. See the other posts hereabouts for more information about rules and voting.

Just so you don’t forget, submissions start this Wednesday, 4 January, and will last about a week-and-a-half. Before that, let’s have a recap of last year's winner and some sage advice from its sponsor, Roger...

That’s the kind of thing to aim for! (Not that everyone should submit up-tempo ’60s numbers, of course – Arvid’s winner from 2010, which Mr. Scroll will help you find, was a ’90s anthem. Stuff from every decade’s done pretty well so far.)

And now it’s over to the man the UK probably wishes really had won it for them...

As defending champion it is a joy and thrill for me to try and help you all do better this year!

I’d like to be able to tell you all exactly how I found and chose Colour My World last year. But I honestly can’t remember. I think the thought process was probably something like this though:

1. Heavens to Pet! This may not be one of her most well-known songs, but it is definitely one of her best.

2. Petula really should have done Eurovision. She was famous in France!

3. Colour My World is less than 3 minutes. That’ll shut the pedants up!

4. The UK started sending naff cheese from 1967 onwards.

5. The UK didn’t send anything resembling a 1960s pop song until 1965.

6. Petula could work those 1966 stairs even better than Milly Scott.

OK, that last thought only just occurred to me. But basically, just find a good song and then fit as best you can with a country and year. Don’t overthink it! Although, don’t underthink it either. Kylie is not a realistic Swedish entrant. Really.

Remember that people are voting for the song that best matches the country and year, not the song they like the most. However, lots of songs will fit very well and then people will probably end up voting for the one they like the most anyway. So don’t enter a really shit song. Unless it’s being nominated for the UK in the last 10 years of course, in which case you have no choice!

Now let’s see if I can manage to follow my own advice.

*deletes Kylie playlist*

All that. (Apart from deleting the Kylie playlist – tsk!) So if you haven’t got an entry yet, get thinking! Remember: submissions open this Wednesday. By which time I’ll hopefully have an email account sorted ;)
